Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has cancelled a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, 74, who was convicted of murder in Miami-Dade County. It is the first time DeSantis has withdrawn a death warrant. A second execution was still set to go ahead Tuesday.
The reversal came days after a failed execution attempt involving Christa Pike drew sharp attention over Florida's lethal injection process. The governor gave no immediate public explanation for withdrawing the warrant for Thompson in particular.
