Latest News About GPT-5.6 launch promises faster code generation and lower costs

OpenAI today released a new GPT-5.6 on July 9, 2026.

The model is billed as a highly token-efficient system for coding, and software creation, with a 54% improvement over prior versions.

OpenAI said the launch was pushed back to satisfy strict U.S. cybersecurity measures.

GPT-5.6 is expected to reduce compute costs for programmers and speed up code generation.

OpenAI also merged Codex into its desktop application, now called ChatGPT Work, and packaged the new model inside.

Sea announced a collaboration to host a regional Codex hackathon in Singapore in August.

The event will focus on students, future startups and developers looking to experiment with the new tools.
